The thymus is the primary gland of the lymphatic system located just beneath the breastbone. The thymus is largest relative to body weight at the age of two, is absolutely largest at puberty, and begins to rapidly shrivel and atrophy soon thereafter. By 40, the average person has only a small portion of his or her thymus still intact.

When small animals have their thymus removed they experience a profound wasting disease, characterized by an increased incidence of infection, cancer, immune system suppression, failure to grow, allergies, neuromuscular paralysis, and autoimmune diseases. The T-4 helper cell is the most important cell in the immune system because it controls many key functions of immunity. It does this by secreting lymphokines and cytokines, among them interleukin-2 and interferon, which “tell” cells to attack and destroy invading pathogens. T-4 cells also transform B cells into antibody-producers to particular antigens. In addition, T-4 cells call on bone marrow to manufacture more of itself and other types of T-cells, which play a role in producing white blood cell levels, red blood cells and the important natural killer cells, that attack and destroy cancer cells. However, as initially produced in the bone marrow, T-4 cells will not perform these functions unless they are first “programmed” in the thymus where they are preprocessed to gain specificity to antigens which have previously stimulated the immune system.
