TL501 $27.38 A great formula for immune support, this vitamin C formula contains 500 mg. of vitamin C and 325 mg. of bioflavonoid complex in each capsule. Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a natural water-soluble substance found in citrus fruits and green vegetables. It is an antioxidant, a free-radical scavenger that protects tissues against damage by oxidative stress. Other Benefits of Vitamin C:
The adrenal glands store a larger amount of vitamin C than any other organ. Physical stresses on the body such as infections, cigarette smoking, extreme temperatures, ingestion of heavy metals, and chronic use of certain medications also signal the need for increased intake of vitamin C. Bioflavonoids Bioflavonoids are water-soluble substances found in citrus fruits, rose hips and other plants. They enhance the absorption of vitamin C and should be taken together. Twin Labs C-Plus Bioflavonoid Complex contains 50% total bioflavonoids consisting of flavonones (hesperidin, eriocitrin, narigen and naringenin), flavonols , and flavones. The human body cannot produce bioflavonoids, so they must be supplied by dietary intake. Benefits of Bioflavonoids
Bioflavonoids and Asthma Herbs and plant products are extremely helpful for asthma. Michael Heinrich, at the Center for Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy, School of Pharmacy, in London, discovered that a key target for asthma (as well as arthritis) is the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappaB) transduction pathway, which activates many inflammatory cytokines. Some well-known plant chemicals that target NF-kappaB include several phenolics such as curcumin (in curcumin), and flavonoids. Other bioflavonoids are potent weapons against asthma. Researchers recently looked at the effects of lycopene on airway hyper-reactivity in patients with exercise-induced asthma (EIA). The researchers used 30 mg a day of lycopene and 7-minute exercise sessions. All patients given placebo showed a postexercise reduction of more than 15% in their forced expiratory volume (how much air you can blow out). After receiving a daily dose of 30 mg of lycopene for 1 week, 55% of patients were significantly protected against EIA (Neuman et al. 2000). Pycnogenol, a standardized extract of French maritime pine bark, rich in bioflavonoids, reduces asthmatic symptoms and circulating leukotrienes, and improves lung function in asthma patients (Rohdewald 2002). Finally, a diet enriched in isoflavones results in reduced antigen-induced eosinophilia (increase in eosinophils) in the lung in asthma patients (Regal et al. 2000). Eosinophils are white blood cells that may become overexpressed due to an allergic response. The flavonoid quercetin helps reduce allergic reactions, asthma, and hay fever by preventing the release of histamine. By blocking the release of histamine rather than acting on histamine receptors on other cells, quercetin reduces allergic reactions more safely (no drowsiness) than many conventional drugs (Miller 2001).
